performances: the teacher uses appropriate strategies and resources to adapt instruction to the needs of individuals and groups of learners.
essential knowledge: the teacher knows when and how to use appropriate strategies to differentiate instruction and engage all learners in complex thinking and meaningful tasks.
Various learners are stimulated in different ways. Verbal, auditory, kinesthetic, and spatial are a few multiple intelligences demonstrated by today's students. Teachers must be wary of addressing each of these types of learners because it is likely that a good mix of these students will be housed in one class. Designing lessons that incorporate different learning strategies in one can greatly increase student productivity, achievement, and engagement.
By creating a lesson that involves collaborative kinesthetic work that engaged students in group activity, students maintained a high level of interaction, critical thinking, and problem solving among their peers.
Plot Puzzle Pieces was an activity that required students to collaboratively work together to recall the plot to Part 1 of The Odyssey. The plot of each of the books for Part 1 was summarized into a condensed version of the main events of the plot. The summaries were cut into sentence puzzle pieces where students needed to put the "plot puzzle pieces" back in order to re-create the summary. This required engaging prior knowledge, problem solving and critical thinking skills. This activity also served as a review for the Part 1 Exam where students needed to complete the assigned study guide by using the completed plot puzzles. This activity required effective communication skills to be able to work together in a group to accomplish a task which is particularly important when disagreements arise.
