Formative assessments are used to measure learning and knowledge acquisition during lessons. By using different version of assessments that include components that address the diversity of student learning, each student is given appropriate opportunities for proficient achievement at a given task.
To assess the retention of the knowledge of the poetic devices and figurative language used in literature, a sheet with the song lyrics "Firework" by Katy Perry was utilized. Students were given the song lyrics and the "Poetic Devices and Figurative Language Test". Students were required to identify the device being used in the song and provide a definition of the device and explanation for the lyric.
Teaching an inclusion classroom with ELL students, two versions of the test were used. One that included a word bank and one that provided specific passages to pinpoint the answers. Each version of the test addressed the learning needs of students by either limiting and narrowing the possible options with specific line numbers or giving students visual opportunities to utilize the process of elimination through the use of the word bank
