standard 9: "lesson and instructor evaluation"
Essential knowledge: the teacher understands and knows how to use a variety of self-assessment and problem solving strategies to analyze and reflect on his/her practices and to plan for adaptations/adjustments.
critical dispositions: the teacher takes responsibility for student learning and uses ongoing analysis and reflection to improve planning and practice.
Assessments are given to students to gauge student achievement and progress. However, teachers are not always held to the same accountability of teaching effectiveness. It is important that educators engage in self-assessment and evaluation in order to determine teaching effectiveness and whether teaching must be adapted to fit the needs of the changing classroom and student dynamics.
During the course of teaching The Odyssey, I did a "temperature check" after administering and correcting the Part 1 Exam for the epic story. Because the scores were not as proficient as I had expected, I administered an anonymous student evaluation assessing my teaching thus far. This provided me with the necessary information to make the changes needed to raise comprehension, understanding, and overall interest and engagement for the remainder of the story.
Although many students found the information and lessons to be fun and engaging, most students said that I moved very quickly through the lessons and did not give enough time for the info processing to occur, therefore, many students were not able to retain the information. I spoke to each of the classes and discussed with them the results and I thanked them for being honest and that the information will help me to plan the remainder of the unit so that learning is efficient and meaningful.
